Balkan Wars 1912-1913

The two Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913 sealed the fate of the declining Ottoman Empire. he decline that had begun at the end of the 16th century with the battle of Lepanto and had continued with the Turks' defeat at the gates of Vienna by the Christian armies commanded by Prince Eugene of Savoy.

6. yüzyıl boyunca Bizans ve Osmanlı imparatorlukları, ardı sıra aynı mekanları (Doğu Akdeniz - Karadeniz, Balkanlar - Anadolu), aynı başkentten (Kostantiniyye - İstanbul) yönettiler. Büyük Kostantin, Kostantinopolis'in temellerini Ekim 324'te attı, son halife Abdülmecid, İstanbul'u 4 mart 1924'te terketti. Bu süre içinde yöreye yeni halklar girdi: Slavlar, Bulgarlar, Türkler, eskileriyle karıştı ve yeni oluşumlar ortaya çıktı.

Modern Tarihçilikte “Rûm” ve “Rûmî” İslam, Osmanlı ve modern Türkiye üzerine birçok kitabı bulunan Bernard Lewis, çok-kültürlülük üstüne yazdığı ve yakın geçmişte yayımlanan bir açlışmasında “Osmanlı Türkleri” deyiminin ötesine gidip onlarda kimlik aramasına giriştiğinde “Rûmî” tanımını da devreye sokmakta, Osmanlı’yı değişik bir aidiyetle de kimliklendirmektedir: Osmanlıların resmi dili genellikle Türkçe olarak açıklanır, ancak halk kendilerine Türk dememiştir, ülkelerini de Türkiye olarak görmemiştir. Türk ve Türkiye sözcükleri Avrupa’da en azından 12. yüzyıldan beri kullanılagelmiştir; ama Türkiye’de Türkler tarafından kullanılmamıştır.
