What does Turkey contribute to EU-Turkish relations?
Turkey offers a rapidly growing and emerging market of 69 million people and is
one of the top trade partners of the EU:
52% of Turkish trade is already conducted with the European Union (only 8% with
the United States or Russia).
Turkey is the EU's 7th largest trade partner and the largest emerging market in
Europe.
Turkey imports about 20% more from Europe than it exports.
25% of Turkey's GDP is industrial production, 60% is services and only 11% is
agriculture.
Liberalisation of services and public procurement markets in Turkey will provide
invaluable opportunities for European companies:
a developed infrastructure
one of the lowest crime rates in the world
globally competitive human resources
a geo-strategic base for international business
a legislative environment in progressive alignment with EU standards as a
consequence of its customs union and pre-accession process with the EU
After accession, European companies will benefit from higher rates of return on
their foreign direct investment in Turkey.
As a reliable NATO ally, Turkey's membership will consolidate both the military
and civilian aspects of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, and greatly
contribute to the EU's economic power on the global scene.
