THE LOCATION OF TREBIZOND (TRABZON)  AND ITS BOUNDARIES

Τrαbzon is located on the Black Sea coast of  the northeastern part of Anatolia (Asia Minor). It is between the eastern longitudes 39 10' 30" and 40 25 10" from west to east; and between the ηοrtern latitudes 40 30' 10" and 41  7' 07" It is connected  to Istanbul via sea with a distance of 560 miles; Εrzυrum  a good and well-cared highway, also Rize with a highway of 80 km. And Samsun with a highway of 354 km. The area covered by Trabzon is 4685 km2.

THE ECONOMİCAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF TRABZON

Trabzon, which is considered the most important harbour of the Eastern  Anatolia due to the commercial relations and increasing density paralel to the European industry that has emerged during the second half of the nineteenth, century, had proven to be the great gate of Turkey on the Eastern Black Sea coast and the starting point of the Ιrαηίαη transit highway. It was the result of these economic and social developments that Trabzon had become province which had included today's Sίηop, Samsun, Ordu, Giresun, Rize, Αrtνίπ and Gümüşhαηe in 1868.

After the World War Ι, hand  craft and local production which were quite developed in the past became less active, and due to the railway service of Sivas-Erzurum the relations Τrabzοn and the Eastern Anatolia weakened and the commercial contacts with the Black Sea countries lost its popularity.

During the World War ΙΙ the shipment activities were limited because the Black Sea had become a battle field; the most important export products sυch as tobacco and hazelnut were of no value and so the living standards were affected badly.

As a result of the general development of the our-country there appeared vitality in the economic and commercial life of Trabzon and some important steps have been taken. The Coastal Highway built according to the up-to-date traffic standards, the new harbour with its modern shipping conveniences have increased the commercial relationswith Central Anatolia and the neighbourhood; consequently some industrial enterprises and workshops have started to come fort. This progress, however, has not been at the sufficient speed and level, in comparison with the western and the southwestern parts of the country.

             AGRICULTURE

When the places reserved for the social and residential areas are taken out from the total area of 4685 km2 of Trabzon, there remains an area of 454.100 ha. If we don't take the meadows, pastures , forests,  heaths and the unproductive pieces of land into consideration, the fields suitable for the agriculture of orchards and crops constitute a very small land of 158.935 hectares. Trabzon is suitable for polyculture because the ecologic conditions are sufficient forthe agriculture of several crops Hazelnuts and tea for orchard garden agriculture; corn and potatoes for field agriculture; tobacco from industrial plants; and the vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplants, pepper, leeks, beans, etc.. constitute the most important
